Understanding the Hair Growth Cycle

In order to understand how laser hair removal works, you first need to have an understanding of the hair growth cycle, which consists of three main phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen.

Laser hair removal is only active during the anagen phase, also referred to as the active growth phase, which is why several treatments are necessary for both partial and complete hair removal. During the anagen phase, the root of the hair still receives nourishment from the blood supply. The laser targets the root of the hair, destroying it and preventing future growth. Multiple treatments are necessary due to the various stages of the anagen phase.

The catagen phase is the transition phase when the hair follicle detaches from the blood supply, and the hair growth stops. During the telogen phase, also called the resting phase, an old hair dies and gets pushed out by the new growth during the anagen phase.



Each hair grows at an independent rate, which means there’s no way to know when an individual strand is in the anagen phase. To target as many hairs during the active growing phase as possible, multiple laser treatments are needed. The exact number of treatments depends on a variety of factors, including skin type, treatment area, hair color, and hair density. Laser Lounge recommends every customer receives about 6 to 12 treatments to have long-lasting results.
